Some Interesting Points About E-bikes

Here are some interesting points about the e-bikes and the industry that you may not be aware of yet. It's an industry that is growing very quicky.

E-bike sales has increased 95% since July 2016 to July 2017. It's a $65 million industry now. There is no sign of it slowing down either.

Some e-bikes come with a throttle that engages a motor with a press of a button.

The electric bikes is basically a “peddle assist”. When you push the pedals on a pedal-assist e-bike, a small motor engages and gives you a boost, so you can zip up hills and cruise over tough terrain without gasping for air.

The harder you pedal, the bigger the boost, the faster you’ll ride—to a point. E-bikes let you ride along at a brisk clip, but they aren’t motorcycles.

Some èhas a “Eco” (low) and “Turbo” (high) switch so you can control how much boost you get. Eco uses less battery power so you can go further on your charge. Turbo uses more power but is a lot more quicker. However on some models when you pedal you are actually recharging the batteries.

For those who aren't in great shape but wanting to get in shape it allows you to ride longer distance helping you achieve your goal. 55% rode their bikes before purchasing an e-bike, after purchasing an e-bike 91% rode their bikes.

If you are a professional cyclist it make a great transition from training to leisure riding. You can ride without putting as much energy out helping recovery time.

There are several types of e-bikes on the market. They are fat, cargo, commuter, recreational, hardtail, full-suspension mountain, and even performance road bike styles. So there is a bike for all kinds of riding. Also people are using bike to commute. Twenty eight percent surveyed said that they bought an e-bike specifically to replace driving a car.

Some people use them to run errands. Most errands are within 10 mile of the house. Running errands on an e-bike is a lot quicker and simpler due to parking alone. A survey found that owners replaced 46 percent of their car commutes and 30 percent of their driving errands with e-bike. Another nice thing is you don't need to change clothes when you reach your destination because your not sweaty but your getting exercise.

A Colorado University found that when 20 non-exercising men and women e-biked about 40 minutes three days a week, they improved their cardiovascular fitness and blood sugar in just one month.

The distance you are able to go will depend on the type of batteries and power used. The average distance ranges from 35-100 miles before batteries needs recharging. E-bike is inherently heavier due to all the reinforced frame, batteries, motor, and other components. The weight difference can be 20lb or more. The technology of the batteries is getting better though.

One drawback is some non-motor single tracks prohibit these kinds of bikes. However this stance is changing. Most recently, IMBA, (International Mountain Bike Association) the sport’s largest public advocacy group, shifted its stance to support allowing access for some pedal-assist e-bikes (those that top out at 20 mph) on some trails.

One of the hold backs of owning one is they are very expensive. The starting price is about $1500. The higher quality ones are between $2500-$5500 from a well known manufacture like Bosch, Yamaha, Shimano. Even car manufacturers is getting in the game.

Ford officials note that the electric bike market is growing rapidly, citing 30 million sales last year worldwide. Every major bike manufacturer—and literally dozens of smaller ones—is already in the e-bike game. They are also investigating ways to eliminate traffic congestion in high density urban traffic areas with e-bikes.

European Cycling Union announced that it will create a new racing circuit for e-bikes, including e-road and e-mountain bikes, for the 2019 season. It will include an electric mountain bike competition in the 2019 World Mountain Bike Championships.

When riding an e-bike you need to take precautions. Traffic doesn't always see cyclist, so stay alert, It will take more distance to stop due to weight issues, also the bikes pick up speed quicker. So you need to be alert of the traffic condition at all times around you. So now just have fun on the e-bike and remember safety first.
